What is IHS?? Is It a secret code?

The IHS symbol is a christogram. Meaning that it is a combination of letters that form an abbreviation for the name of Jesus Christ.

The letters "IHS" represent the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus, "Iēsous" (ΙΗΣΟΥΣ).

This is Iota (I), Eta (H in capitalized form in Greek), Sigma (S).

In the early Church, IHS was used as a secret code to identify Christians.

In the later use of latin "IHS" was interperated as an acronym for "Iesus Hominum Salvator," meaning "Jesus, Savior of Mankind".

I’ll show more pictures of these Saturday and Sunday as I take them. There will be a new page added to the website just for these 12 crosses called “IHS Crosses.”
